I recently acquired this simple working puukko, but can't id the maker. The blade flat is obviously "Finland", but I can't make out the maker's name in the fuller. The initial looks like a "V", but the I don't know; maybe Inami or Inmari or even maybe Lammi. Any help appreciated.
Thanks Rich

Hi.
To me it looks like it says V Inari. Inari is a place in north Finland . |

Thanks Kimmo -
But isn't it usual for the maker's name to be in the fuller and not a place name? Rich S

Hi.
Yes I think this also. Maybe the letter V is the maker and the place were he lives is Inari. V can be for Veikko, Viljo, Ville and so on. It's an old knife I can see. |

Inari could be the maker's name. In the US and elsewhere, it's not unusual for some family names to be the same as city or state names whether there is any historical relation or not. I'm a bit sceptical that Rio's cousin Vinny made the knife. Probably that B.S. detector going off that all us good scientists are born with :-) Rich S

After a good cleaning with Neverdull and a good magnifying glass, the last name is definitely "Saari". There is a M. Saari listed in Ristinen's book, not sure if there are strokes worn from what looks like a V or not. Maybe a relative of M. Saari. Anyway, thanks to the guys who helped with suggestions.

Hi Rich.
I found this site. here is the link: http://www.cultur.nu/knivar/puukko/p...komapp2009.htm If you scroll down a bit on that site you find on the left side a puukko made by sign V. Saari. Maybe the site owner can tell you more about this knife. /Kimmo Lilja |

Thanks, I know that site and check it often, but I didn't see that knife. Will check it out. Much appreciate the help. --------- Got the maker's full name: Vihtori Saari from another site. Rich S
