Default My first Sami (sort of) knife and sheath

A friend of mine gave me a bunch if sawmill bandsaw blade material to try out so I thought I'd try a Sami style knife and sheath. The handle is 100 year old Moose antler, the sheath is dyed and sanded then waxed veggitan on the bottom, pinned together with bamboo meat scewers, the upper sheath is heavy Moosehide, the sun symbol medalion is Elk antler. Thanks for looking.

Regards

Robin

Nice knife, and the sheath is a serious piece of workRC

Thanks, It was a fun project to make. I thought I'd try a leather sheath for the first one, next I'm going to do a Moose antler sheath.

Looks good.

Despite tutorials and owning some good examples of traditional Scandi sheathes I still can't figure them out. I like how you get the stitching on the backside.

Hi Bruce
I can tell you for sure, the sheath took wayyyy longer to make than the knife and i'm still dickin around with it. I added a lanyard to the knife and a belt loop, now i'm thinking of adding a piano key ivory inlay at the bottom of the lower sheath. If it looks good I'll probably replace the Elk antler Sun with ivory too.
I wrote the sawmill company about the steel content but haven't heard back yell but the stuff sure gets sharp and so far is holding a good edge.

Best regards

Robin

Come on,
100 year old moose antler?
Moose don't live to be 100 years old.

Aside from that it is awful easy on the eyes.

Hi there Kevin
I think the Moose met his end about 100 years ago ;-) his rack was hung on a barn in Nova Scotia for about 90 years.
Heres the final on the sheath with Elk replaced with ivory, a new ivory panel on the bottom and a braided lanyard and belt loop added.

Best regards

Robin
